Corona's threat to the Banking sector

Banking services remained intact for more than two months. This did not cause any financial problems to the customers. But the Corona crisis has endangered the lives of millions of banking workers. After the announcement of Unlock-1, public life is getting better and markets and other services are coming to the fore. However, due to hygiene and corona prevention measures in the banks, the lives of the employees working here as well as the customers coming to the bank for work have been endangered.

The rapidly spreading corona virus in the country has targeted essential service personnel. While the police force is battling Corona, Corona has now infiltrated the banking sector. So far 2,100 bank employees have been infected with corona virus and 12 have lost their lives. For the safety of the bank employees, the apex union of employees has now appealed to the state government. The organization has expressed fears that the banking services could collapse if it is not addressed immediately.

On behalf of the United Forum of Bank Unions, the apex body of all bank employees, a letter has been issued to the Secretary, Financial Services, Central Government, regarding the safety of banking employees. All branches of banks should be sanitized daily with immediate intervention in view of the corona outbreak in the Mumbai metropolis, urgently demanding the appointment of guards for crowd planning at each branch. It has been demanded that all the banks in the state should be informed about the security of Covid-19 through the state level Bankers Committee.

In the last two and a half months, 12 bank employees have lost their lives due to corona in Mumbai alone. About 2,100 bank employees have been infected with the corona. Thousands of employees working in the Mumbai metropolis live in the suburbs. They have to come to South or Central Mumbai for work. Due to the disruption of local services, the bank employees have to travel a life-threatening journey by BEST bus. Devidas Tuljapurkar, convener of the United Forum of Bank Unions, said it was risky for employees and customers to go to work in such a crowded bank. He said that now the management of the bank has insisted on 100 per cent attendance. The number of corona patients in Mumbai is increasing day by day. Forcing them to go to work in such cases has created uneasiness among the bank employees.

In view of the seriousness of the corona, the government has demanded to allow bank employees to work from home, one day off, pregnant women and employees above 55 years of age, 50% attendance and insurance cover of Rs 50 lakh for government employees as government employees. Tuljapurkar said.

The union has requested the Chief Minister, Principal Secretary, State Level Bankers Committee to take immediate decision on these demands, he said. It is possible to provide uninterrupted customer service to bank employees living in the Mumbai metropolitan area if they are provided with a separate transport service to reach the bank branches in Mumbai. Tuljapurkar said the measures were needed to build trust among bank employees in view of the rising contagion of transactions and deaths in Mumbai.

Bank hours are from 10 am to 2 pm and other year-end work, 15H, PPF extension etc. are compulsory till June 30. People will come to the bank to complete it within the given time, thus increasing the risk of corona for bank employees.

Insurance cover is the basis for sinking bank depositors

The banking system handles the savings of the common man. Protecting bank and bank's depositor is the main objective of the Reserve Bank, which is why the credibility of the banking system is maintained today. But the revelation of scams like Yes Bank, PMC Bank has once again created an atmosphere of mistrust in the banking industry. While insurance among deposits may not be the solution to some of the scams, it can be prevented only if the perpetrators of these scams are severely punished and held accountable to all concerned, including the Reserve Bank.

The need for Democratization of Banks!

On July 19, 1969, the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi nationalized 14 large private banks. This Month marks 51 years since that incident. Coincidentally, the nationalized banking industry is currently going through an unprecedented dilemma. As per the mega consolidation plan by Central Government, Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India merged into Punjab National Bank (PNB); Syndicate Bank into Canara Bank; Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank into Union Bank of India; and Allahabad Bank into Indian Bank. Following the consolidation, there are seven large public sector banks (PSBs), and five smaller ones. There were as many as 27 PSBs in 2017. The total number of public sector banks in the country came down from 18 to 12 beginning this financial year. It is undeniable that there is a blockade in public sector banking today. The gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of public sector banks (PSBs) have declined by Rs 89,189 crore from a peak of more than Rs
